Blog 6- History of YouTube

YouTube was launched on February 14th, 2005. Former Pay-Pal employees Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim were the ones behind the project. They were headquartered in San Bruno, California, and are still located there today. The website only took a couple of months to develop and had a pretty successful launch. YouTube was formed based on the idea that regular people would like a central place to watch other people’s “home videos” (Britanica.com). YouTube was almost an immediate success within its first few months and it had 30,000 viewers a day. People enjoyed watching other people’s videos as well as uploading their own. YouTube was a new form of entertainment that had never been seen before. YouTube allowed for more creativity and personal expression on the internet. People were now able to create and share their own content showing their own creativity.

As mentioned, YouTube was instantly successful and was bought by Google around a year and a half after its launch. Due to this buyout, the YouTube website went from being an up and comer to a triumphant video sharing platform. YouTube caught on because people liked the idea of being able to connect with others through videos. They were able to share and send things to each other which enhanced relationships. YouTube was a way for people to get to know each other and connect with one another. Having thousands of being able to see the same video lead to instant connection and showed shared interests.

YouTube is a great platform that has changed the way society views content. People put all kinds of things on YouTube allowing viewers to see things they normally wouldn’t have. There is educational content as well as comedic content. YouTube has opened the door for so many opportunities and advances. Students are able to study with YouTube by watching videos on topics they’re learning about. YouTube has even become a job for some people. Vlogging has created a new form of income for people. People who share their lives on YouTube get paid for that as well as influencers. They all get paid through advertisements and endorsements. These are all positives that YouTube has manifested.

A negative that came from YouTube was the idea of “hiding” behind comments. Like most other social media, people are now free to say whatever they want because there is no way to track them down and no fear of instant confrontation. This is an even bigger issue now with people being insensitive and rude to others. Another negative is that anyone can upload anything. There are some copyright issues but none that stop someone from filing you in public and uploading it. This is a violation of privacy but no way to track it or prevent it.

As time goes on more issues are discovered in society but that doesn't mean this platform is bad. YouTube has changed the way society views and absorbs content. This invention has lead to streaming services and other forms of instant video communication.
